The car rental industry in Ghana, commonly referred to as car hiring, traces its roots back to the 1950s with pioneers such as John Holt Bartholomew, U.T.C, and African Motors.
During the late 1950s, with the establishment of state hotels in the capital cities, there arose a need for safer, reliable, clean, and comfortable vehicles for guests, rather than relying on painted taxis. This marked the beginning of the formal car rental service in Ghana.
The Car Rental Association (CRAG) was established on the 11th of March, 1998, by Mr. James Owusu Bonsu, who became the first President of CRAG, as well as CEO of VANEF/EUROPCAR, Mr. Adusei of Speedway, Mr. Tackei, and Okatakyie David Nana Anim, among others.
The association's primary goal is to promote sound business practices within the car rental industry in Ghana and provide its members with relevant information, data, and statistics related to the car rental industry and its associated sectors.
